Eating out in Nairobi
By dcouper on Aug 21, 2007 in Food, Kenya
Having had the opportunity to work in Kenya, and food being such an important part of the culture, I thought that eating out in Nairobi would be an appropriate topic to write about.
Whilst working there I would enjoy going out every once in a while. The first place (and most well known) is called Carnivore. You don’t just go to Carnivore for the food it is also the experience. How it works is you pay about 1400Ksh (about 23USD), and all the meat you want is included. The great thing about this place is that the meat is brought round on swords and as much as you want is put on your plate, and the choice of meat is stunning – beef, pork, chicken, crocodile, osterich, gnu, hartebeast and more… It really is a good evening out and if you have time the restaurant is attached to a night club – so if you are not too full after all the food you can give dancing a shot.
This was obviously a little extravigant to do more than once in a while, so for all our breakfast, lunch or casual dinner needs (as well as the occasional coffee break) we would head out to Java House – a coffee house that serves some great meals and coffee. The first and biggest one is located on the Ngong road heading out of town in a place called Adams Arcade – but there are a few more including one near the Hilton in town and one now at the airport (so you can pick up last minute bags of coffee before you leave). I highly recommend the Bens burger for a meal and the ethiopian coffee – a winning combination any time.
If you have any restaurants in Nairobi that you recommend – or want to comment on the above, please leave a comment…
