One of the things on this hidden menu is the value meal that my wife and I consider to be McDonald’s best value meal. It is McDonald’s “5 Dollar Value Meal“.

The Five Dollar Value Meal consists of a cheeseburger, medium fries, medium drink and a choice of a sunday or apple pie dessert. We find it to be pretty much the perfect amount to fill you up, while giving you lot of sweet and savoury flavours in the meal.

Having spent a bit of time in Australia - I really did enjoy the strength of the pound (sterling) over the aussie dollar - it made everything wonderfully cheap. No where else have I enjoyed it more than going out for a steak. If you have ever been out for a steak in Britain you will know you pay over the odds for a shaving of meat - Australia is blissfully the opposite of that.

For about the equivilant of 3 Mochas at Starbucks in Britain you can get a wonderful steak at Hogs Breath (www.hogsbreath.com.au). These steaks are slow cooked for 18 hours - and are incredably tender, I have not had a better steak anywhere on earth - I am a sucker for the hickory smoked rib! The service is great and the atmosphere is friendly, and the prices are not unreasonable.

There are locations all over Australia - Townsville, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth (one of my aims is to eat at all of them!), so wherever you are visiting in Australia there should be a restaurant (assuming you are not going too out of the way- like Broome!).
Well all this talk of steak has made me hungry - and unfortunately there are no hogs breath restaurants on our island - so I will have to make do with Outback Steak House (the closest thing to an Aussie restaurant that the Americans could manage!)

Having had the opportunity to work in Kenya, and food being such an important part of the culture, I thought that eating out in Nairobi would be an appropriate topic to write about.

Whilst working there I would enjoy going out every once in a while. The first place (and most well known) is called Carnivore. You don’t just go to Carnivore for the food it is also the experience. How it works is you pay about 1400Ksh (about 23USD), and all the meat you want is included. The great thing about this place is that the meat is brought round on swords and as much as you want is put on your plate, and the choice of meat is stunning - beef, pork, chicken, crocodile, osterich, gnu, hartebeast and more… It really is a good evening out and if you have time the restaurant is attached to a night club - so if you are not too full after all the food you can give dancing a shot.

This was obviously a little extravigant to do more than once in a while, so for all our breakfast, lunch or casual dinner needs (as well as the occasional coffee break) we would head out to Java House - a coffee house that serves some great meals and coffee. The first and biggest one is located on the Ngong road heading out of town in a place called Adams Arcade - but there are a few more including one near the Hilton in town and one now at the airport (so you can pick up last minute bags of coffee before you leave). I highly recommend the Bens burger for a meal and the ethiopian coffee - a winning combination any time.
If you have any restaurants in Nairobi that you recommend - or want to comment on the above, please leave a comment…
